Advice for buying new computer?

It looks like my PC might not be fixable after all. Still waiting on the verdict.

If I need a new one, I’d really like to make a smart choice. I don’t do a lot of gaming, though my daughter might play a few games online or want to install some game CD-Roms. I use the internet a lot, for banking etc. I use the computer to store records for cat rescue, documents, jpegs, and emails. I do tend to have a lot of pictures. I do want to be able to burn CDs; being able to burn DVDs would be a plus.

Any advice on what I should be looking for? Money is very definitely an issue. I don’t want to drop 1,000 dollars on a computer that’s just more than I really need, but I also want a reliable machine that I won’t have to worry about breaking down or becoming obsolete too quickly.

Also, how hard should I try to avoid Vista? I’ve heard awful things about it but it seems to be hard to find a computer without it!

Can a laptop really replace a desktop? Will it cost more?

Thanks

Well, it looks like you are going to need Windows XP. Vista is getting terrible reviews, so yes, I suggest you avoid it (although some of the bugs have been worked out with SP1 which is an update to vista, but its still more trouble than its worth) You should get an HP, since these are actually the best computers for the money, or a Dell, but I don’t advise dells too much. It looks like you are looking for a computer that just does the basics, Email, Internet, Games, Music, Movies, ect. Or you could get a Mac Mini, but I am not too sure on what you are used to using.

I advise on getting a good deal on an HP PC

The Computer Specs should be:
-No More Than 1GB Ram (More if you are going to run Windows Vista, that’s another problem of it) But 1GB should be just fine for Windows XP.
- 2.0 – 2.4 Ghz Processor, more than this just is not needed for what you will be doing.
- 100 – 200 GB Hard drive (Most computers now come with at least 100 GB, some with more, but you probably will not need more than 200GB)
-A Decent Video Card (which is used for games) comes with pretty much any PC nowadays so this is alright

That’s all, basically look for a HP Computer with 1GB Ram, 150 – 200 GB harddrive. MAKE SURE YOU BUY SECRITY, NORTON ANTI-VIRUS! Lol!!

That’s pretty much it!

Happy PC Buying!

-hope that helped
